Senior Commercial Officer

Main Purpose:

Main Purpose of Job:  

Flight Data Services provide an outsourced Flight Data Analysis service to aircraft operators worldwide. 


Purpose of Role:                       To be responsible for FDS commercial bids and contracts


Responsible to:                        GM/VP and Senior Commercial Manager at CAS level

Liaison with:                             GM/VP, Management team, all FDS employees, Sales Manager and Marketing team.  Managers of FDS Inc & Asia FDS.

Overview:  Working closely with the Sales Manager UK and the business teams, you will be the commercial specialist for FDS.  You will be an adviser to the business, informing the teams about commercial risk issues, commercial and supply chain management requirements and compliance with corporate commercial and purchasing policies.

Main Tasks of Job

  • Supporting the local business teams in shaping business requirements and managing business risk
  • Taking responsibility for commercial and contracts administration
  • Ensuring compliance to corporate policies and working with the business to provide guidance on policies and processes
  • Supporting the business procurement requirements and supporting supply chain contract management. 
  • Working with the finance team to ensure procurement activities align to budgets and ensuring processes are adopted
  • Take ownership of new commercial contract negotiations as required, working with sales and operational teams to bid for new business, win the business and secure the contract.
  • Support the sales and bids functions to develop business propositions and commercial offers which meet L3Harris’ s strategic goals.
  • Take responsibility for contract management of customer and supplier contracts, supporting the business account managers and operational delivery teams
  • Manage contact review and renewal requirements, lead the bid process for new and recurring business opportunities
  • Support the business with commercial administration, including customer due diligence and
  • Lead business improvement projects and identify new initiatives that deliver L3Harris’s strategic goals.
  • Lead commercial negotiations for winning new business
  • Work with sales and operations to build relationships with existing and new customers and maintain high levels of customer engagement
  • Provide advice and support to VP/GM of FDS and the leadership team on any commercial or contractual management issues.
  • Provide management reporting of key metrics relating to commercial performance of FDS.
  • Take ownership of local processes and policies that are relevant to the commercial function and ensure commercial is fully integrated into the business operating model
  • Support contract handover from the sales team and ongoing support to the delivery teams to ensure full awareness of all obligations.  This will include producing contract summary documentation and obligation tracking tools.


Essential skills and experience

Educated to Degree level in a relevant discipline (or equivalent)        

Qualification and educational requirements

  • Demonstrable evidence of working in a commercial role within a relevant industry, aerospace or defence is preferable.
  • Solid understanding of commercial practices, ability to draft contract amendments, contractual letters
  • Exposure to risk management, including the application and interpretation of contract terms for customer and suppler contracts
  • Sound knowledge of contractual terms and conditions, i.e. limits of liability and IPR,
  • Proven negotiation skills with customers and suppliers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation
  • Demonstrable evidence of meticulous attention to detail and time management
  • Self-motivated, proactive, confident and highly collaborative
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Previous aviation training industry knowledge and experience would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be given
  • Trade compliance experience desirable
  • Ability to fulfill the travel requirements of the role
