NAS Upgrade

17th May 2017

On the 1st of April 2017 we began the process of expanding our Network Attached Storage (NAS), doubling both the size and capacity of our previous infrastructure. In the past calendar year our current production storage has grown from 20TB (3 million flights) to 60TB (6 million flights), resulting in the previous network storage reaching 86% capacity.

The storage expansion not only facilitates future capacity to scale, but has also increased the bandwidth and security of data, further allowing us to maintain the availability of each recorded flight for customer viewing. With a projected 18 million flights to be stored by 2018 and an average data per flight increase from 10 to 15MB (due to an increase in frame and parameter size), the recent update facilitates the creation of a scalable infrastructure at Flight Data Services.
